I really, really wish that they had kept this scene in the final cut. It bothers me so much when people use Dean’s quote about how Benny’s the only one who never failed him as a way of supporting Benny as a character. Nothing against Benny, but he’s not perfect. That wasn’t the point of that line. The point of the line was that Dean puts people on pedestals, and when they show themselves to be flawed human beings (or angels or vampires) like Sam did, he’s very slow to forgive. Dean and Benny’s friendship was not sustainable because he was always going to fail Dean in some way. This little scene highlights that inevitability, and the fact that Benny going out heroically is the best way it could have ended.
