Why does Leverage not have a bigger, more active fandom?
I mean the show has a main cast of five people. Two of those people are some of the most impressively and complexly written female characters I have seen on television. The other three male characters all defy stereotypes, you have a professional assassin who specializes in hand to hand combat who also raises bonsai and is a classically trained chef. You also have a black guy who is a total computer geek and genius. Then you have the ex insurance agent/ ex Catholic seminarian who decides to run a gang of super thieves. And those are just the men.
One of the women is a cute little blonde who will proceed to stab you with a fork, leap off a forty story building, and then steal a priceless painting. She has a complex backstory that is slowly revealed throughout the series and eventually she takes over the entire operation.
The other woman is a failed actress and brilliant conwoman who can manipulate anyone she wants too, this frequently includes the men on her team. She also speaks countless languages and is a total badass. She is also played by an ethnically Jewish actress who is the daughter of Russian and Polish immigrants.
This show has some of the best character development I have ever seen along with snappy plot and brilliant one liners. It’s also entirely on Netflix. It also makes Dr. Who references at various points. Summary, this show is absolutely beautiful. You should all watch it.
I actually think the fact the show is so good is the reason the fandom never took off. In a lot of ways, fandoms are built in the cracks (or chasms*) that canon leaves unexplored or unfilled or just digs itself deeper into. So when you get a fandom that is really very complete** – good characters, thoughtful reflection, a well developed plot that closes neatly – you have people that watch it and love it, and probably squee to each other over IM, but not necessarily spend time talking about more broadly. All the things that fandom ends up saying to each other, all the questions it asks, in large part the show already answered them. Just my theory anyway.
*whichever fandom you are thinking of, I meant that one.
**which is not to say Leverage does not have problems, but comparatively.
“if I said that, then that means I would be thinking about you and Parker, which I never do.”
YOU ARE LIKE THE WORST LIAR ELIOT SPENCER LIKE HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO PULL A SINGLE CON EVER WITH YOUR BAD ASS LYING
Eliot moving to stand back-to-back with Parker & Hardison for anonymous.
#can i take a minute to talk about this please #the two people with the biggest touching issues obviously don’t know what personal space means #they don’t respect each other’s personal bubble and that’s particularly important when talking about parker #parker of all people initating the contact #because ofc there isn’t enough space on the couch to sit so she has no other option but sit on eliots armrest #because the wall wasn’t large enough #there were no other bar stools and the room was too crowded #what are you even talking about there never was enough room for anything #so obvs parker had no choice but brush against eliot #how am i not supposed to ship you two?
And Hardison makes three. ❤ ❤ ❤
#a really good ot3 is dependent on each pairing of partners having a unique and interesting relationship on their own terms #in addition to their dynamic all together #and because leverage is a perfect thing in an imperfect world it delivers #IN SPADES #here we see eliot and parker in their natural habitat #the easy physical understanding they fall into—how aware they are of one anothers’ space; the way the other moves #of the whole team they’re the most physical—they make their living with their bodies in a way hardison sophie and nate don’t #and so they also speak most fluently with them #basically eliot and parker speak the same language and it manifests like this—in the easy camraderie #in how comfortable they are in each others’ space despite the way they usually wear it like armor (notbecauseofvictories)
Eliot “no shoes on the table” Spencer.
#really though how much of Eliot’s time is spent just trying to housebreak his teammates? #no Nate whiskey for breakfast is a pub song not a valid lifestyle choice #no Sophie you cannot get yet another set of monogrammed towels #bring me a list of your twelve favorite names and I’ll scramble them up and you can have a surprise each month #no Hardison your feet do not belong on the table #your empty soda bottles do not belong on the floor inside this apartment or in the van #lagers do not belong on your winter menu and definitely not with a chocolate lava cake damn it Hardison we already covered this! #(your trackers do definitely belong in Parker’s shoes though that one was probably a good call) #speaking of which no Parker your shoes do not belong on the roof a pigeon knocked one off and scared the shit out of me #also your shoes do not belong on the table either #no one’s shoes belong on the table #please for the love of god can we just sit here and plan our elaborate con like a well-behaved family #can I not have just ten minutes of peace and quiet #do not make me turn this heist around (tags via ereborne)
Do not make me turn this heist around!
legitimately the greatest thing about this show was how everyone was like#nate we’re moving into your life you can’t get rid of us we’re here for good#and nate is a dumbass about everything#it’s a backwards brady bunch#the kids were like this is our family now you two make out and stop angsting so we can all be okay and stop bad guys#leverage#i miss this stupid show so much
I love how when they “stopped off” in Portland and Hardison immediately:
1. Bought a microbrewery/bistropub
2. Turned the back rooms into their office
3. Found them a clientElliot objected because FOOD MATCHING WITH MICROBREWS IS VERY DIFFICULT
THE BREW PUB MENU IS THE MOST DIFFICULT MENU OKAY
I also love how they cut a hole in that wall with a CHAIN SAW and we never ever even once saw a door there, or another space. They just did that to fuck with Nate and I approve.
Six months after Nate and Sophie leave Portland, that damned painting mysteriously appears outside their villa in Comporta. Nate tries to ban it from the house. Sophie makes him sleep on the porch until he learns how to graciously accept a gift like a functional human being.
I love how Hardison approaches moving into Nate’s life especially. Like, “uh, excuse me, I think it’s more like you retroactively moved into my life. My property. This property. That I own.”
re-watching Leverage
ʕノ•ᴥ•ʔノ#I just love how as soon as hardison smushes his face with eliot’s face#eliot immediately jerks away and looks to parker for help#like ‘he’s your boyfriend do something’#and parker just rolls her eyes#like ‘no way when he gets all cuddly in public he’s your boyfriend’ (via secondbestpolicy)
