When he sees something beautiful, he has to scratch it, to mess with it and he doesn’t even really know why himself. And that’s kind of what makes up the complexity of Peter Hale.

That’s the best description of Peter ever.

“I just don’t believe him. Alright, in Ms. Blake’s class we’re reading Heart of Darkness. And it’s in first person, right? Narrated by Marlow. The thing is is that he’s an unreliable narrator. You know the details have been changed, you know, just because of his perspective.”

Peter and Gerard: A Crackpot Theory

I’ve had this crackpot theory about Peter that’s been bugging me for a while, so I figured I’d go ahead and post it and see what other people thought. The premise: Peter and Gerard are working together.

Before I start, I want to make some things clear. This is a crackpot theory which is based on suspicious behavior by Gerard and Peter and mysterious behavior by Deaton (and there’s a lot of both). If an alliance between Gerard and Peter ever were to form, I don’t doubt for a second that each of them would be interested solely for their own benefit. Also, I am of the school of thought that despite any helpful actions so far, Peter is an unrepentant villain, and it definitely shows here.

On to the theory.

The first thing that had me wondering about Gerard and Peter was the showdown in 2.12. When the main characters (Derek, Isaac, Chris, Allison, Scott, and Stiles) are focused on Lydia and Jackson being reunited in love, what is Peter doing? He’s gone. He disappears after he guts Jackson. He isn’t shown leaving, and there isn’t a big deal made about the fact that he’s not there anymore; he’s just gone. Strangely enough, this is right around the time Gerard disappears (we’re shown that his body is missing right after Jackson dies). I find it odd that they both leave the scene at approximately the same time. It’s also odd that Gerard was able to get away at all without someone noticing. It’s even stranger that no one found him later, especially since Deaton is shown to be tracking him via black goo in his Season 2 closing scene.

Another interesting point occurs in a scene without either Peter or Gerard present. In 2.10 when Derek wakes up with Deaton in the Hale house, Deaton knows exactly what happened (Peter’s resurrection). He also tells Derek that “[Peter] will tell you that he’s the only way you can stop Gerard, do not trust him.”  Despite that, Derek ends up using Peter’s plan (which in this instance has the same effect as trusting him) and Gerard is only taken down because of Scott’s plan. The implication of Deaton’s words is still there though; that if the final showdown really had been up to Peter, things might have gone differently. That Peter is definitely not on Derek’s side, and might even be on Gerard’s side.

The Hale house scene reinforces the idea a few sentences later too when Deaton says, “I’ve known Gerard for a long time. He always has a plan. And something tells me it’s going exactly the way he wants it to,” and looks pointedly at the spot where Peter woke up from his grave under the floorboards. While it might be a misdirection, it’s a pretty clear implication that Peter is part of Gerard’s plan. And given what we know about Peter and his affinity for scheming, it’s not unreasonable to think he might also be using Gerard as part of his plan.

There are also some questions that have multiple possible answers but are still interesting to think about if you consider that Peter and Gerard might be some sort of allies.

Like how Gerard knew where Derek and Scott were meeting to deal with Jackson. Only Scott, Isaac, Derek, Peter, and Chris knew because it was a last minute decision. At that point in time, Chris had completely cut ties with Gerard, and Scott was never alone to make the call, so if someone told him it had to have been Peter. (Although this could also be explained if Gerard had Chris followed, since it was his car that went to the warehouse.)

(As a side note, I’d like to say I don’t think Scott would have made the call to Gerard, even if he had the opportunity. Even if he needed Derek and Gerard in the same place for his mountain ash plan to work, I’d guess that he would have realized that having Gerard and a revived kanima in the same place would be a bad idea, no matter how his plan turned out.)

And what was the point of the scene at the police station in 2.10 where Gerard and Peter see each other? Peter is standing in plain view looking at Gerard, and doesn’t leave (around a corner) until after Gerard sees him and registers him. If he’d wanted to, Peter could have done all the spying and recon he wanted at the police station without letting anyone know he was there. So why did he let Gerard see him? Reasons would be clear if they were working together, but otherwise it seems like an insanely dumb idea. Especially if he doesn’t know Gerard’s true motivations, since on the surface it looks like Gerard wants revenge for Kate (and he would know that Peter killed her – Peter would be making himself a prime target when he’s physically too weak to fight off an attack).

And why did Peter and Derek split up at when they met Scott, Isaac, and Chris to save/kill Jackson? Isaac and Scott already knew about Peter from the locker room, so it’s possible he was hiding from Chris, but neither Derek nor Peter knew Chris was coming. So why would Peter feel the need to hide? Especially since he gives himself a grand reveal later when he and Derek kill Jackson. If he were working with Gerard – particularly if he were helping Gerard escape – I think he would want to be remembered as having been present (hence killing Jackson), but not have anyone remember him disappearing (this would be the not-being-involved-in-any-other-aspects part).

Lastly, a partnership between Peter and Gerard could have very interesting consequences for Season 3.

We’ve had 4 episodes so far, and from what we’ve seen of previous seasons, all the major players have been introduced by episode 4 (1.04 we meet Kate, 2.04 the kanima gets a name, 3.04 we know there is a ‘Darach’). Even Matt noticeably appears in 2.01, although we had no idea what he was doing other than being a creeper. That being said, we still haven’t met any (new characters who are) potential suspects for the role of Darach, which implies that it’s a character we already know.

I think it’s most likely that the Darach is Gerard, which isn’t exactly a huge leap of logic when you consider that every other character has a pretty good reason why they’re not, but that’s a discussion for another day. I’m assuming that the Darach must be human (or at least mostly human). Considering that s/he uses mistletoe and probably other magical substances such as mountain ash, I find it unlikely that the Darach could be a werewolf.

Which doesn’t explain Lydia’s walking in on dead bodies (since Peter has been the cause of all of her psychotic breaks thus far) unless Peter is working with Gerard. Peter working with Gerard on the sacrifices would explain why Lydia is being drawn to them and why he seems to be MIA most of the time.

The two of them working together would also answer the question of who the second big bad is. The pattern so far has had two villains in each season, with the one revealed second being worse. We’ve known about the Alpha Pack being the Big Bad since the end of Season 2. So what could possibly be worse than an an Alpha Pack that can screw with your memories and seems to be intent on killing almost everyone? I think that a team up of Gerard and Peter could definitely fit the bill.
